Taras Shevchenko

I wonder what Taras Shevchenko would think of seeing the yanachar Yanukovych standing in front of his monument laying a reaf? Rumors have it that the newly elected President will take part in cermony honoring Ukraine's greatest poet?

My thoughts, my melancholy thoughts,
My children, tender shoots!
I nursed you, brought you up -- and now
What shall I do with you? ...
Go to Ukraine, my homeless waifs!
Your way make to Ukraine
Along back roads like vagabonds,
But I'm doomed here to stay.

There you will find a heart that's true
And words of welcome kind,
There honesty, unvarnished truth
And, maybe, fame you'll find ...
So welcome them, my Motherland,
Ukraine, into your home!
Accept my guileless, simple brood
And take them for your own!

Yanuk called the distinguished Russian writer, Anton Chekhov, a Ukrainian poet. I cetainly hope he doesn't confuse Shevchenko being a great Russian poet.....
Never know what will pop out of his mouth. Let's hope he does not go about reciting any poems either.

You can read more about Ukraine's poet, painter, bard, hero, Taras Shevchenko here. Just as Stepan Bandera and the many freedom fighters of Ukraine.

Certainly not the same sentiment of having a true Ukrainian President taking part in such a ceremony as honoring Taras Shevchenko. I would think Yanukovych has his sights more om May Day Parade in Moscow.

Hearing that Yanukovych said that events on the celebration of Shevchenko's 200th birthday would be conducted along with Russia. He said that a respective proposal would be made during Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's visit to Kyiv in the first half of this year.
Certainly Taras must be turning in his grave.....
